The dependent variable in an experimental design is the one that the researcher measures, while the independent variable is the one that the researcher manipulates. The independent variable is the cause of a change in the dependent variable, which is the effect. For example, if a researcher is studying the effects of an experimental medication on a certain medical condition, the independent variable would be the medication. The dependent variable would be the medical condition.
The researcher would then observe the effects of the medication on the medical condition and use this evidence to support their argument that the medication is effective in treating the condition. Your argument guides your research and its implications.
