There are some debate on whether a leader is born or made.  However, most researchers argue that leaders are mostly made by certain conditions or social enthronements, such as conflicts.  This is because you can be born leader, but you need someone to train, nurture or mentor you and bring out the leadership skills and credentials in you. Here some ways in which people become leaders:

1). Some people inherit the positions of leadership through the channel of succession. Succession is a process of identifying and developing new leaders who can replace leaders when they retire or dies, or when the senior person in leadership leaves the organization. The successor in this context must have the right knowledge, skills and abilities that are needed to fill in the vacant position of leadership.

2). Some become leaders by being elected into positions of leadership. This  mainly takes place in the government office level or political level. This is where democratic process takes place, the election by a majority of votes, which may be done through popular mass action, and such leaders use charismatic power to draw people unto themselves.

3). Some become leaders by use of force or violence or manipulation. There are people who have ascended into the position of leadership through conflict and violence and even maneuvering their way into the positions of leadership.
