Ready for a change of scene? Consider these five unconventional study locations. You'll be surprised at how a new space can help you focus!
Your dorm room may seem like the most convenient and comfortable place to study and get work done, but with the lure of your bed and the comforting glow of your TV, choosing this spot can become a classic—and recurring—mistake for many college students.
The comfort and familiarity of your room can cause you to get easily distracted and lose focus. These may seem a little … well, strange, but bear with us and consider these five unconventional spaces to help improve your study routine. You’ll be surprised!
This suggestion might not be groundbreaking, but a lot of students don’t think to check this option out. If you’re able to find an empty classroom with a whiteboard, Wi-Fi, and a desk, it’s a great space to get you into study mode. This is also a perfect place for group study and group projects.
This is another option if you like the idea of outdoor space and a view. As long as there aren’t too many distractions, an open-air study area can wake up your senses and keep you alert. You can take breaks to absorb your surroundings and feel inspired or relaxed (or both). As a bonus, you might even get some vitamin D! Just wear sunscreen.
If you go to school in a “college town,” you’ll most likely have access to a number of free museums. This is a recipe for studying success for a number of reasons. A museum is probably quiet, and it may even be inspiring! When you’re surrounded by art or history, you’ll likely be encouraged to study that much harder. Consider a museum café or even a quiet bench within the museum. Just make sure your setup won’t be disruptive—to yourself or others.
You’ve probably never considered it, but your car can be a perfect place to study. No, really. It’s quiet and contained, but also has access to music if you study better with tunes playing in the background. Park near your dorm or apartment, or in a school parking lot, to get access to Wi-Fi. Even with no Wi-Fi access, your car is a useful place to read and take notes without anyone interrupting you. Plus, it’s a familiar space that you wouldn’t typically associate with school work.
If you’re fortunate to go to school near a body of water, take advantage of it. Nothing is as serene and soothing as water. Obviously, this is likely best in the spring and summer months, but if you can find a coffee shop or comparable space with water views you can get the same effect year round. The tranquillity of water can make you feel more at ease when you’re stressing about an upcoming test.
Everyone has a unique studying style. Try out different locations—it might make all the difference in helping you stay focused and productive this semester.
