5 Ways To Effectively Organize Your Schedule

Blog

So you want to organize your hectic life. The short answer? Plan. It takes as long or as little time as you have to spare. Simply writing down your schedule will save you much more time and grief later on.

This semester, Huseyin takes 18 hours, conducting about 9 hours of a week, and maintaining his work plus another side hustle. The coolest part? He can usually maintain his diet, exercise, visit friends, and sleep about 8 hours a night. Crazy, I know. Here are the simple ways that enable him to stay on top of life:

1.     Get a planner, and actually use it. If you don’t have one, or you’re like Huseyin and don’t want to spend money on one, use online planners or print out free calendars online. There are some cute planners on Google and Amazon, as well as FREE printable!

2.     Do daily, weekly, and/or monthly check-ins. Check out what tasks and events have been completed. It will help you look ahead as well as know how to prepare for the coming days and weeks.

3.     Write things down. Huseyin had a terrible habit of random mental reminders bombarding his thoughts, so he couldn’t even focus on the task at hand. Inevitably, he would forget something and lose time and energy in the disorganization. This is the easiest, simplest way to stay organized, plus you can use your notes on your phone or classic pencil and paper.

4.     Purge the unnecessary. Toxic friends, unproductive activities, bad habits, all of it.

5.     Unfun comes before the fun. This habit takes time and discipline. Basically, prioritize tasks and separate school vs. life vs. job tasks. Save your "life" tasks for the weekends, such as organizing bills, setting up payments, car maintenance, cleaning, or laundry, to name a few.

Balancing school and life can be tough. Also, understand that your days and weeks may not actually follow your plan, and that’s okay. Planning gives you parameters of what you need to do. Do your mandatory school work first, then break up your long list of “other” things to do each day. Trust me, it helps. At the end of the day, it will take time to figure out what works for you. I’ve noticed that planning habits change from semester to semester due to changes in courses and other activities. These tips will help you stay on top of your schedule.
