Mapping the Global Campus in Higher Education Research

Over 254 million students are enrolled in higher education around the world. That number has doubled over the past 20 years and is growing every year.

A great education also looks different in every country and for every student. Instead of fitting into Hollywood-esque portrayals of college life, these students bring a spectrum of different experiences and perspectives to their educational journey. It’s crucial that research about higher education and campus life reflects the richly diverse experiences of the global student body.

This is a prerequisite for substantive, relevant research. Because what goes on in higher education, from Tokyo to Nairobi to Los Angeles, is both highly varied and intimately interconnected, as students contribute knowledge to their fields and transition into a global workforce.

It’s crucial to ensure that students are actively engaged in providing their perspectives. When universities prioritize this diversity in research, they can better support a global, diverse student body and learn from the success and mistakes of neighbours around the world.

In the annual temperature check on student’s lives, hopes and concerns—nearly 12,000 students were surveyed in higher education in 15 different countries. It was learned that nearly two thirds of students around the world want AI skills training and think colleges should change how they assess students.

It was also realized that the popularity of Generative-AI use among students in their studies varies widely across countries. While the research confirmed the conventional image of a generation struggling with mental health, it was observed that in most countries, student optimism increased last year from 2022.

Almost 80% of students felt that their education is preparing them well for the job market, especially in Kenya, Indonesia, South Africa, Brazil, and Mexico. This global approach enabled researchers to achieve a deeper and more comprehensive insight into the varied needs and challenges of students worldwide.

Global research helps understand the common problems facing today’s students, giving us the opportunity to share knowledge so that educators and policymakers are better equipped to create a positive education experience for all.

It challenges every stakeholder in higher education to set aside their assumptions and expectations and uncover the true intricacies of higher education and the college experience in 2024. This kind of research help campus leaders gain more visibility into how student bodies fit into the global landscape, boosting international collaboration, and illuminating student challenges that might otherwise go unnoticed.
